THE BEST OF RANDY NEWMAN
Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2018
The album contains some of my favorites: Rednecks, New Orleans Flood, 1917. Some of the more obscure stuff is good, too ("Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man").

Randy Newman''s first four albums are all five-star classics, but if I was forced to choose my favorite it would have to be this one. There''s an odd love/hate, happy/sad vibe going through this sneaky little concept album that leaves me highly impressed, but also a little uneasy, every time I play it. But usually, rather than get bogged down in the politics, I just enjoy the masterful beauty of the songs: "Guilty", "Louisiana 1927", and "Birmingham" (which has a middle-eight so beautiful that there''s no way it could''ve been written by a mere mortal) are all examples of a songwriter at the top of his game. Newman would have a hit or two after these sessions, but his work would never again match the standard set by this gem of an album.

This is the album that first got pre-Hollywood Randy Newman widely noticed. Only for those capable of understanding irony and reflection. "Rednecks" is the most famous cut here and is one of the sharpest critiques of racism ever recorded. He skewers Southern attitudes then turns it around to the rest of the country and holds up a mirror so they can see their own hypocrasy. Often simple musically but always hits just the right note.

I highly recommend getting the deluxe edition which includes "Johnny Cutler''s Birthday", the original themed demo that "Good Old Boys" evolved from.

This is one of the only items I''ve seen with over 10 reviews where every rating is 5 stars. This is one of the great concept albums of all time. It''s one of the few albums that I''ve owned that I never hit the skip button. It''s one of the few albums I can listen to over and over without getting burnt on it. Some of the others include the 4 amazing concept albums by Pink Floyd.
Being a native of Louisiana and knowing some of the history he refers to makes it that much more entertaining. It''s sad, funny, tragic and real. The only criticism I have, as an alumnus of LSU, is the little piece in "Rednecks", "College men, LSU. Went in dumb, come out dumb too." Remember, it is a satirical work.
Since Katrina, I can''t listen to "Louisiana" without having to fight back tears.
I could go on about every tune, but I type slow. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn''t discovered this album

Though somewhat controversial because of the misinterpretation of "Rednecks", this album is really great. Highlights include: "Kingfish", "Guilty", "Mr. President, Have Pity on the Working Man", and "Rollin''." So few albums have songs that fit together cohesively, and while not a complete concept album, the songs work together well. I''m a fan.

This is indeed my desert island CD. The only single album I could listen to for the rest of my life. How it has been as overlooked as it has amazes me. I''ve bought copies and sent them to people I thought would share my opinion, only to be greeted with deafening silence in return. I begin to think there must be something wrong with me. It''s brilliant, poetically and musically and culturally. And you know what, I take back what I said. It isn''t me. There''s something terribly wrong with anyone who doesn''t love this album.
